So in the Page's init event, the page's ViewState hasn't been loaded yet, also its whole structure(such as sub controls hierarchy) hasn't been constructed completely. If you try accessing the viewstate at that time, you'll find it invalid. So I suggest that you try implementing the operation in the Page's "Load"

I don't know what would cause such weird behaviour: 1) On machine 1 using Windows 2000 Server, IE 6, the control in the ASP page failed to initialize. When I use the visual interdev and try to add a new Richtext control, it would say the control failed to load. I tried other controls, and they works fine.

It's not advisable to look at the source of the page of you don't know the 1st thing about HTML cuz it'll just confuse you, like in this case.
